Overview
(1855-1922) Lemuel P. Padgett was a lawyer and politician who served as a US Representative from 1901 until his death. Born in Columbia, Tennessee, Padgett was educated at Erskine College and admitted to the bar in 1877, beginning his practice in Columbia. Padgett later became involved in state politics, serving as a state Senator from 1899 to 1901. Padgett would serve more than two decades in the House, serving in eleven consecutive Congresses. He served as the chairman on the House Committee on Naval affairs and proved influential in legislating military and naval policy.
