Overview
Jonathan Bassett captures moments of life, intimate family scenes, evocative landscapes, and animals brimming with personality, through the expressive language of oil paint. Rooted in the dramatic beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains where he was raised, his work employs loose, confident brushwork, simple palettes, and striking value contrasts to evoke emotion rather than dictate detail. A firm believer in "leaving room," Jonathan intentionally steps back before overworking a piece, inviting the viewer to complete the narrative with their own imagination. This philosophy lends a sense of vitality and discovery to his widely sought-after pet portraits, known for their whimsical charm and accurate spirit, as well as his figurative and landscape works. Influenced by masters like Andrew Wyeth and contemporary painters including Chris Fornataro, Andrew Tischler, and Seth Winegar, Jonathan paints from his studio in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where he lives with his wife, Jackie, and their 3 daughters.
