Watershed Theatre kicks off Summer Classics Series

(COLUMBIA, TN) May 16, 2018 - Watershed Public Theatre announces the first production in its Summer Classics Series will be A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. The play runs June 8, 9, 15, 16 at 7:00 pm and June 10 & 17 at 3:00 pm at Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee.

Columbia State professor Beverly Mitchell is leading the artistic team as the director of the comedic play. “This is one of Shakespeare’s most light-hearted productions. It’s full of mistaken identities, physical humor, love gone both right and wrong, complete with a happy ending,” said Mitchell.

Performances will take place outdoors at the plaza of the Jones Student Center on Columbia State’s main campus at 1665 Hampshire Pike in Columbia. In the case of rain, performances will move indoors to the Ledbetter Auditorium, located inside the Clement Building on Columbia State’s main campus.

“With this production we are introducing two new elements,” stated Watershed’s Executive Director Kate Foreman. “First, a portion of the cast makes up the newly-formed Journeyman Troupe, amateur actors who receive free theatre training in addition to their participation in the play.” The Journeyman Troupe includes ten people, teens and adults who have varied levels of experience. “By providing training to the Journeyman Troupe, we are helping these performers learn more skills and grow as artists, which we hope will lead to more opportunities.”

The second element is ‘pay-what-you-can’ admission. Rather than setting a specific admission price, the theatre company will ask those in the audience to determine their own ticket price. The company hopes to encourage all who are interested in theatre to attend regardless of financial means. “Those who want to learn more about Watershed and local theatre can enjoy this timeless story for as little or as much as they are able to contribute,” said Foreman. The price range for tickets to Watershed productions is typically $10-$20.
